Date: 21 January 1717
(old style). This is 21 Jan 1718 by modern reckoning.
John Hankin
of Holbeach, Lincs, butcher & William Alling, of Whapload, Lincs, yeoman, bound to pay £20 to Matthew Clay of Bourne, Lincs, farmer,
on 21st July 1718.
Signed: John Hankin, William Allin [sic].
Witnesses: (illegible initial, perhaps J.) Bernard and Thomas
Charge.
In other words, Hankin and Alling had borrowed
£20 from Clay, for six months. They were clearly working as partners and
perhaps needed capital for sowing fodder for the following winter, with a view
to getting some lambs to market by mid July to pay for it. It is interesting
that they should have looked to Bourne for the money rather than Spalding, the
larger and to them, nearer town.
