An Assessment made in the pursuance of an Act passed in the 38^th Year of his Majesty’s Reign for granting and Aid to his Majesty by a Land Tax to be Raised in Great Britain for the Service of the Year, 1798, and made perpetual by another Act passed in the 38^th Year of the Reign of his present Majesty and also in pursuance of an other Act passed in the 52^nd. Year of his said Majesty Reign for continuing and granting to his Majesty a Duty on Pensions, Offices and Personal Estates.

1. ^ D^o. means ditto, which is the Italian for ‘said’ (OED). Here it means, ‘as stated in the table cell above’. ‘D^o. la’ will have meant ‘ditto but tax due was lately assessed under the name following’. In this instance, the assessment is that of some land owned by George Bailey but last time, presumably in 1816, it was assessed as being owned by Mr. Braybrook. This would help an auditor in his job of checking the accountant’s figuring.
