Bourne West Field, from the Bourne Abbots Estate Map of 1825.

Figure 7a. is a plan of the West Field between Bourne Wood and the castle site. The Bourne Abbots map makes it clear that the old, open field extended to the parish boundary in the west and this is corroborated by field list of the Exeter Estate Book.

In this Bourne Abbots map, green indicates land of the Bourne Abbots Estate. Very pale pink indicates land held copyhold of the Manor of Bourne Abbots, brown is roads and blue, water. Yellow-brown lines mark boundaries between blocks of property.

The pale brown boundary between the North and West fields is fairly clear in Figure 7a. At its northernmost point, it adjoins Bourne Wood, the eastern edge of which it follows southwards until it turns sharply eastwards and curves round the Stray Pastures. Besides the boundary on the map, the latter’s name indicates that this land was not part of the arable open West Field. It has the appearance of an assart into the wood, made at some stage after the Mediæval West Field was laid out.

Tracing the boundary continues in the caption of Figure 7b.
