Bedehouse Bank, from the Exeter Estate Book of 1826/7

Plan of Bedehouse Bank as part of the estate record, enabling the marquess’ agent to keep track of the property. Most of the area shown is known as Bedehouse Bank but the tree-shaped road layout within it, also has that name. Its lower branch to the left runs north and south. The Marquess of Exeter at this date, was the 2nd Marquess, Brownlow Cecil, who lived from 1795 to 1867.

The legend ‘Bourne Eau’ marks the non-navigable part of the river. The head of the navigation basin arising from the 1780 Bourne Eau Navigation Act is the broad part to the top. The ditch to the right is known as part of the Car Dyke but is a medieval diversion of the Roman feature with which the road towards the bottom runs parallel. The Roman line would enter the plan at about the middle of the bottom edge. The owners are named in the corresponding list.
