14. Bourne Castle. The far edge of this puddle
curves round the base of the motte. The single tree to the right of centre,
stands on the motte’s revetment. On the left, the grass beyond the first row of
trees represents the defensive lake in the river’s natural valley. This is now made
ground over the former watercress
beds. The grass in the middle ground in front of it is Hibbitt’s Figure 6
feature C. In the background on the right is the Wellhead Pool. Beyond it is
the broad part of the pomœrium, which shows as grass.
