I am indebted to Richard Wheeldon for drawing this source to my attention. On pp 94 and 96, it contains two reports, each on a 162 kilometre endurance event run in two stages on consecutive days. The winner of one attained an average speed of 15.48 kph and of he other, 17.2 kph. It demonstrates that a modern horse, bred and trained for endurance can cover 80 kilometres in a time which amounts to 15 kilometres per hour. i.e. 5⅓ hours.
