The DNB (James Sheridan Muspratt) says that he was invited in 1848, to start work on the project, publishing it in instalments. This was completed in 1860, when it was re-published as a book. In its time, this was a serious technical guide to chemical processes in industry, whether building, food, fuel or metallurgy.
